About the Author

Stephan Diehl is a full professor for computer science at the University of Trier, Germany. His research interests include programming languages and compiler design, web technologies, educational software and visualization, in particular software visualization. He teaches courses on software visualization at university as well as in industry and has been heavily involved in various international software visualization related events.

Excellent textbook, not intended as a quick start guide!

The previous reviewer (in Spanish) criticizes the book for being too theoretical and not having practical examples with details about visualizing large projects. They state that it is a starting point for someone interested in studying the subject, but not as a quick start for visualization. This is not surprising.

The description on the back cover refers to this book as "the first textbook on software visualization", which "targets both students and teachers in computer science". It further states that it is written for graduate students and researchers, "as it will provide a broad and systematic overview of the area including many pointers to tools available today".

In essence, such a review is like going to an Italian restaurant, then disparaging the food because you really wanted Mexican instead. It's not fair to the author or future readers.

The author does a phenomenal job of covering a very broad topic exactly as he intends to. The writing style is brief and informative, and the organization is excellent. The book is broken down into coherent sections that address specific methodologies that exist (or have existed) in this field. To wit, here is a summary of the chapter contents:

1. Introduction
Definition and explanation on software visualization, taxonomies and surveys, etc.
2. Visualization Basics
Basics of human perception and cognition, graphical representations, techniques, and metaphors.
3. Static Program Visualization
Observing properties such as program architecture, control flow, data flow, etc.
4. Dynamic Program Visualization
Visualizing runtime data, including algorithm animation and visual debugging.
5. Visualizing the Evolution of Software Systems
Visualizing how software structure, coupling, etc. evolve over time.
6. Evaluation
Quantitative and qualitative evaluations of various methods, plus empirical results.
7. Conclusions
Summaries, resources for further reading, and though on the future of visualization.

As a Master's student in Computer Science researching Software Visualization, this book is an invaluable resource. It covers virtually all of the seminal works and major ideas that have influenced the field in its short history. The author certainly provides abundant resources for the reader to find the individual tools, and if they are difficult to comprehend or use, the tool is to blame, not the author.

I highly recommend the book as a reference for the theory, history, and progress in the field of Software Visualization.

It is a powerful and effective way to help engineering and architecture educators teach spatial visualization. Most of the 3-D visualization exercises currently being used by students in Design and Graphics classes present the objects in isometric views already in 3-D, asking the viewer to create multiple views, fold patterns, manipulate, reflect, or rotate them. The exercises presenting the objects in incomplete multiview projections asking the students to add missing lines use mostly real 3D objects that are more easily recognizable to help the student correlate 2D with 3D.

This workbook uses a different approach. Each view of the solid represents a letter of the alphabet. The letters are by definition 2D representations and when they are combined to create a 3D object, visualizing it becomes quite a challenge.

About the Author
Dan D. Dimitriu, PhD, P.E., is a tenured professor in SAC’s Physics, Engineering, and Architecture Department and has been the Engineering Program Coordinator at San Antonio College since 2001. He has 21 years of teaching experience in post-secondary education, five years in academic research, and 23 years in private practice as a professional engineer. He has worked on research projects at North Dakota State University and holds also an MBA in International Economic Relations. He has managed several NSF and Department of Education MSEIP grants for SAC, and has been a co-PI for a NASA CIPAIR grant with the University of Texas at San Antonio and for an NSF CCLI grant with Wright University. He was elected Vice Chair of the Two Year College Division of ASEE in 2005 and was the recipient of 2006 NISOD Excellence in Teaching Award. He was also named “San Antonio’s Top Professor” by Scene in SA Monthly in 2006. In 2005 he was the only community college committee member and presenter for the “Enhancing Community College Pathways into Engineering Careers,” a collaborative effort by the National Academy of Engineering’s Committee on Engineering Education and the National Research Council Board on Higher Education and Workforce . Their final report described the evolving roles of community colleges in engineering education, identified exemplary programs at community colleges and model partnerships between two- and four-year engineering schools, and made recommendations for future research in this area. He has also made numerous presentations at the American Society for Engineering Educators Annual Conferences. Dr. Dimitriu is also coordinator for the Alamo Community College District’s participation in NASA’s Aerospace Scholars program and concurrently serves as the director for SAC’s MESA Center. This workbook is a resultant of his leadership and expertise in developing curricula, coordinating engineering educational programs, years of teaching, and years of professional practice.

Great for beginners moving into intermediate visualization

For moving from basics to intermediate visualization, this is it! So many other books have great drawings but no solutions. This not only has solutions, it has several so you can start over or work your way up to more advanced visuals. Also, the letters are an optical obstacle, so there's always a challenge. Perfect for beginners, like me, looking to get adept in engineering drawings so I can carry that into CAD.

In his first book since 1999, it's just like old times as Vonnegut (now 82) makes with the deeply black humor in this collection of articles written over the last five years, many from the alternative magazine In These Times. But the pessimistic wisecracks may be wearing thin; the conversational tone of the pieces is like Garrison Keillor with a savage undercurrent. Still, the schtick works fine most of the time, underscored by hand-lettered aphorisms between chapters. Some essays suffer from authorial self-indulgence, however, like taking a dull story about mailing a manuscript and stretching it to interminable lengths. Vonnegut reserves special bile for the "psychopathic personalities" (i.e., "smart, personable people who have no consciences") in the Bush administration, which he accuses of invading Iraq so America can score more of the oil to which we have become addicted. People, he says, are just "chimpanzees who get crazy drunk on power." Of course, that's exactly the sort of misanthropy hardcore Vonnegut fans will lap up—the online versions of these pieces are already described as the most popular Web pages in the history of In These Times. About the Author
Born in 1922 in Indianapolis, Indiana, KURT VONNEGUT�was one of the few grandmasters of modern American letters. Called by the New York Times “the counterculture’s novelist,” his works guided a generation through the miasma of war and greed that was life in the U.S. in second half of the 20th century. After a stints as a soldier, anthropology PhD candidate, technical writer for General Electric, and salesman at a Saab dealership, Vonnegut rose to prominence with the publication of Cat’s Cradle in 1963. Several modern classics, including Slaughterhouse-Five, soon followed. Never quite embraced by the stodgier arbiters of literary taste, Vonnegut was nonetheless beloved by millions of readers throughout the world. “Given who and what I am,” he once said, “it has been presumptuous of me to write so well.” Kurt Vonnegut died in New York in 2007.

As a kid I was the youngest member of my family, and the youngest child in any family is always a jokemaker, because a joke is the only way he can enter into an adult conversation. My sister was five years older than I was, my brother was nine years older than I was, and my parents were both talkers. So at the dinner table when I was very young, I was boring to all those other people. They did not want to hear about the dumb childish news of my days. They wanted to talk about really important stuff that happened in high school or maybe in college or at work. So the only way I could get into a conversation was to say something funny. I think I must have done it accidentally at first, just accidentally made a pun that stopped the conversation, something of that sort. And then I found out that a joke was a way to break into an adult conversation.

I grew up at a time when comedy in this country was superb—it was the Great Depression. There were large numbers of absolutely top comedians on radio. And without intending to, I really studied them. I would listen to comedy at least an hour a night all through my youth, and I got very interested in what jokes were and how they worked.

When I’m being funny, I try not to offend. I don’t think much of what I’ve done has been in really ghastly taste. I don’t think I have embarrassed many people, or distressed them. The only shocks I use are an occasional obscene word. Some things aren’t funny. I can’t imagine a humorous book or skit about Auschwitz, for instance. And it’s not possible for me to make a joke about the death of John F. Kennedy or Martin Luther King. Otherwise I can’t think of any subject that I would steer away from, that I could do nothing with. Total catastrophes are terribly amusing, as Voltaire demonstrated. You know, the Lisbon earthquake is funny.

I saw the destruction of Dresden. I saw the city before and then came out of an air-raid shelter and saw it afterward, and certainly one response was laughter. God knows, that’s the soul seeking some relief.

Any subject is subject to laughter, and I suppose there was laughter of a very ghastly kind by victims in Auschwitz.

Humor is an almost physiological response to fear. Freud said that humor is a response to frustration—one of several. A dog, he said, when he can’t get out a gate, will scratch and start digging and making meaningless gestures, perhaps growling or whatever, to deal with frustration or surprise or fear.

And a great deal of laughter is induced by fear. I was working on a funny television series years ago. We were trying to put a show together that, as a basic principle, mentioned death in every episode and that this ingredient would make any laughter deeper without the audience’s realizing how we were inducing belly laughs.

There is a superficial sort of laughter. Bob Hope, for example, was not really a humorist. He was a comedian with very thin stuff, never mentioning anything troubling. I used to laugh my head off at Laurel and Hardy. There is terrible tragedy there somehow. These men are too sweet to survive in this world and are in terrible danger all the time. They could be so easily killed.


Even the simplest jokes are based on tiny twinges of fear, such as the question, “What is the white stuff in bird poop?” The auditor, as though called upon to recite in school, is momentarily afraid of saying something stupid. When the auditor hears the answer, which is, “That’s bird poop, too,” he or she dispels the automatic fear with laughter. He or she has not been tested after all.

“Why do firemen wear red suspenders?” And “Why did they bury George Washington on the side of a hill?” And on and on.

True enough, there are such things as laughless jokes, what Freud called gallows humor. There are real-life situations so hopeless that no relief is imaginable.

While we were being bombed in Dresden, sitting in a cellar with our arms over our heads in case the ceiling fell, one soldier said as though he were a duchess in a mansion on a cold and rainy night, “I wonder what the poor people are doing tonight.” Nobody laughed, but we were still all glad he said it. At least we were still alive! He proved it.

A Quick Read Which Will be Sure To Get You Thinking!

A Man Without A Country is a surefire hit for any Vonnegut fan. The book is a collection of ideas and short writings from the mind of 82 year old Kurt Vonnegut. The writings are reminiscent of a modern day blogger which is ironic considering Vonnegut's dislike of technological advance. I feel that his writings in this semi-memoire were quite amusing, well organized and inciteful. His feelings on war and the current state of this country are a little off the beaten path but they open your eyes to another way of thinking. I was also very impressed by his comparison of gasoline/petrolium to drug addiction. Overall this is a great book and a very quick read. Vonnegut will surely go down in history as one of the greatest writers of all time.
