Richard Miller, PhD, is a master of yoga and meditation who holds a doctorate in clinical psychology. Recognized as a leading authority on the practice of Yoga Nidra, he has founded and cofounded several key organizations including the International Association of Yoga Therapy, the Institute for Spirituality and Psychology, and the Integrative Restoration Institute. Currently he is helping research the efficacy of iRest, a healing technique Miller developed based onYoga Nidrawith diverse populations. He lectures and teaches this method across the globe."

Good Overview but Missing Specifics

I would have liked to rate this book higher but I purchased the Kindle version which did not include the audio CD.
I found the book to be very informative in explaining what Yoga Nidra is, its benefits and the various phases, or stages of practice. What I found to be greatly lacking is the details on how to practice.
Without the CD, (I can only assume that directions are given on the CD), I could certainly understand the goals of each stage of practice but had no guidance as to how to go about it.
It might be a good idea to provide a download link, to the audio file, for those of us buying the Kindle version of this book.

Must-have for yoga students and teachers

Yoga Nidra is one of the most powerful practices in yoga. It is also one of the most accessible, which is why this book is so wonderful for new and experienced students. The author provides a thorough exploration of this deep relaxation practice. Yoga teachers will find a wealth of resources to use in the classroom within this book. The included CD allows students to experience guided yoga nidra sessions. The audio production is first rate, and the author's speaking voice is very nice and relaxing. I highly recommend this book for yoga teachers looking to augment their use of yoga nidra during classes. This book is also perfect for students looking for an easy, accessible way to practice yoga at home. The practice is applicable to everyone, regardless of physical condition. Learn to reduce stress and let go with this wonderful book and CD combination.

CD is good, but the book needs an editor.

Yoga Nidra may not necessarily be what some people are expecting. This form of guided meditation doesn't have you envisioning warm sunshine over the body or the sound of a babbling stream. Instead, you are guided through a series of sensing exercises as you examine the relationship between emotions and feelings and their effect on the body - eventually helping you to realize the duality created by the mind that ultimately causes suffering. For instance, you are asked to notice the constriction of the heart as you think about a time when you felt closed off to a person or situation. Then you are guided away from being directly in those feelings, observing them instead. I've been practicing this for some time in the form of vipassana meditation, and Yoga Nidra is a nice supplement to that practice.
The CD is very well produced and Richard Miller's voice and pacing are quite good. His instructions are clear, without talking too much. Some meditation CDs are very wordy to the point of distraction, but this one isn't like that.
However, the book that comes with the CD is in desperate need of an editor. I'm a yoga teacher and generally used to reading flowery material, but this one goes over the top. I found myself reading and rereading sentences trying to cut through all the adjectives to get to the meaning. I think Richard Miller's points are often lost in his overly descriptive text. A good editor would do this book a great deal of service.
I don't think you necessarily need the book to get something from the CD. However, it is useful to understand what the meditation is all about b/c it isn't the same as other forms. It's a shame that his text makes the practice seem overly involved. As such, it took me an extra few weeks to get around to listening to the CD b/c the book made it seem like the meditation was going to be a lot of work.
My advice is to listen to the CD and THEN read the book, even though Richard Miller says otherwise.
