About the Author

Joel Henry managed the design studio software development teams at East Tenneessee State University before joining the faculty at the University of Montana where he's currently an associate professor of computer science. His research interests revolve around topics within software engineering. He earned his Ph.D. from Virginia Polytechnical Institute and State University.

Good as a textbook, lacking for real-world engineers

If I were back in school and knew nothing of what I've learned from working, this would be an excellent book. It's an engaging read, covers a variety of important topics at both an appropriate and realistic level, and also provides some concrete methodology suggestions.

However, without the supplementation of a lecture & exercise format, much of this isn't immediately useful for practicing engineers. To really "get" the lessons, you would likely need either anecdotal stories or real-world case study data presented. Most great software engineering books lean towards the former, since the latter requires help from a Real Human to get the most value you of. This book - geared towards an educational environment - leans towards the case study data.

Also, since it's more of a broad overview than an in-depth study of a particular area of software project management (planning, methodology, people management, political work, etc.), it doesn't even give quite enough of a survey of techniques to dig deeper. At least, it would've been nice to point at a few of the introductory pieces of work or the landscape of available choices. Instead, this book usually paints a broad picture (i.e. "use the appropriate methodology for the team size") and then talks about one specific way of solving the problem (TSP/PSP).

Still, if I were back in school, I would be happy to have this as a textbook - provided I had an instructor who could fill in the gaps.

Good Hands On Advice for the First Timer

In reviewing several texts for a project managment class I will be instructing, I found Mr. Henry's the most succinct in addressing "real world" issues. He sets a realistic tone by focusing on a project's culture and its relationship to processes and tools. The text is not loaded down with unproven theory, and each suggested technique or approach is backed up by the author's personal observation, research or solid references. Henry's discussion on process creation is a realistic one, and I like the fact that he doesn't get religious about any particular approach.
I believe the text provides a good framework to base a course on, but I would have preferred a stronger emphasis on software architecture and its impact on team productivity. The author gives light treatment to this under a section for quality. Also, while testing is discussed and a rudimentary outline of a testing plan is provided, I would have preferred more treatment of techniques in managing followup as well as the considerations in migrating corrections when further work has been done in other areas of development (i.e. regression testing strategy).
Overall, though, this text provides a good start for experienced software engineers running a project for the first time. While the discussion on hardware and software considerations is brief, it highlights an essential check list that is sufficient for an experienced engineer to consider. The price of the book is competitive, but like many of the books in this subject area, I believe the price is a bit much to ask of students.

If the Ar232 is what you're interested in, this is the book you've been waiting for. Really excellent drawings showing all external and many internal details. Great cockpit information. Lots of detail pix, but I could have done with fewer pix of models.

This book was put together on a Friday afternoon. Do not buy.

I normally wouldn't write anything just to pan a book, but I see that the only other review up gives this book 5 stars, and I've got to do my part to warn other aviation historians/buffs about this volume.

144 pages
4 pages (perhaps 5 if you are being generous) of actual text. Not including photo captions.
Of the 140 photographs of the Ar232, fully 71 are of a model. A well done model, but a model.
This is disappointing enough, but the technical drawings (from contemporary pilot and technical manuals) are all nearly totally untranslated. Engine diagrams, various wing configuratons, cockpit layout and armament arrangements; there are illustrations for all, and labeled in German. The lack of care this shows, and the want of detail in the captions is aggravating. In a couple photos of the model, you might find yourself wondering "what that little bit is for?" The caption certainly won't tell you, and the drawings likely won't be of any explanatory use either.

All the photos and drawings do is give the reader a very good idea of what the Ar-232 looked like. Very little else is accomplished by this book.

What you do get, a very brief history of the type along with several dozen photos and some nice drawins would have made a decent 40 page Schiffer book. At 140 pages and a $30 sticker price however, this book is simply not worth your time.

Good Overview but Missing Specifics

I would have liked to rate this book higher but I purchased the Kindle version which did not include the audio CD.

I found the book to be very informative in explaining what Yoga Nidra is, its benefits and the various phases, or stages of practice. What I found to be greatly lacking is the details on how to practice.

Without the CD, (I can only assume that directions are given on the CD), I could certainly understand the goals of each stage of practice but had no guidance as to how to go about it.

It might be a good idea to provide a download link, to the audio file, for those of us buying the Kindle version of this book.

Must-have for yoga students and teachers

Yoga Nidra is one of the most powerful practices in yoga. It is also one of the most accessible, which is why this book is so wonderful for new and experienced students. The author provides a thorough exploration of this deep relaxation practice. Yoga teachers will find a wealth of resources to use in the classroom within this book. The included CD allows students to experience guided yoga nidra sessions. The audio production is first rate, and the author's speaking voice is very nice and relaxing. I highly recommend this book for yoga teachers looking to augment their use of yoga nidra during classes. This book is also perfect for students looking for an easy, accessible way to practice yoga at home. The practice is applicable to everyone, regardless of physical condition. Learn to reduce stress and let go with this wonderful book and CD combination.

CD is good, but the book needs an editor.

Yoga Nidra may not necessarily be what some people are expecting. This form of guided meditation doesn't have you envisioning warm sunshine over the body or the sound of a babbling stream. Instead, you are guided through a series of sensing exercises as you examine the relationship between emotions and feelings and their effect on the body - eventually helping you to realize the duality created by the mind that ultimately causes suffering. For instance, you are asked to notice the constriction of the heart as you think about a time when you felt closed off to a person or situation. Then you are guided away from being directly in those feelings, observing them instead. I've been practicing this for some time in the form of vipassana meditation, and Yoga Nidra is a nice supplement to that practice.

The CD is very well produced and Richard Miller's voice and pacing are quite good. His instructions are clear, without talking too much. Some meditation CDs are very wordy to the point of distraction, but this one isn't like that.

However, the book that comes with the CD is in desperate need of an editor. I'm a yoga teacher and generally used to reading flowery material, but this one goes over the top. I found myself reading and rereading sentences trying to cut through all the adjectives to get to the meaning. I think Richard Miller's points are often lost in his overly descriptive text. A good editor would do this book a great deal of service.

I don't think you necessarily need the book to get something from the CD. However, it is useful to understand what the meditation is all about b/c it isn't the same as other forms. It's a shame that his text makes the practice seem overly involved. As such, it took me an extra few weeks to get around to listening to the CD b/c the book made it seem like the meditation was going to be a lot of work.

My advice is to listen to the CD and THEN read the book, even though Richard Miller says otherwise.

I love Rose Gardner and now I have another new favorite

If someone were to ask what my all time favorite series is, I'd have a hard time picking just one. However the Rose Gardner series is one I'd mention because it is awesome. Rose gets into shenanigans, sometimes through no fault of her own, and has a devil of a time trying to get out if it. There is suspense, drama, action, humor, and love. The characters are great and the writing is superb.

I have not read anything by Jana DeLeon except this but that's about to change. The eccentric ghost Helena is a hoot and I'd like to read more about her hoodlumery. These two characters mesh well together and I could envision lots of scenarios where they end up having to help each other out.

Awesome holiday novella!

I have read both, Jana's Ghost-In-Law series and Denise's Rose Gardner Mystery series. Bringing the characters together from these two series made this novella such a blast to read. You don't have to have read either of the series to enjoy this short story. Hilarious scenes and a great plot. Loved it!

In order to embrace the challenges and controversies that accompany this goal, the editors have solicited experts representing multiple disciplines and methods of qualitative inquiry. Their contributions represent the rich diversity in the field while simultaneously producing a pragmatic and useful guide. While it is neither possible nor desirable to compartmentalize qualitative approaches and issues into neatly organized categories, the construct of method has been chosen as a common organizing device.

The introductory chapter explains the need for such a book and underscores the foundational strengths of qualitative research: flexibility, variation, critique, and innovation. The remaining chapters review the principal approaches to qualitative research with care taken not to standardize, rigidly define, or oversimplify any approach. For ease of use, all methodological chapters are organized around the following elements of inquiry which reviewers tend to examine: definition, sampling, data collection, data analysis, representation, and congruency.

About the Editors -- Audrey Trainor and Beth Graue have been interdepartmental colleagues at the University of Wisconsin, Madison for 7 years. Together with their colleagues and co-members of the Qualitative Research Committee in the School of Education, they have designed a qualitative research minor for doctoral students. Both are members of QSIG, the qualitative research special interest group of the American Education Research Association. Beth is a former chair of QSIG.
