Dragonfly in Amber (Outlander), by Diana Gabaldon

From the author of "Outlander.".. a magnificent epic that once againsweeps us back in time to the drama and passion of 18th-century Scotland...

For twenty years Claire Randall has kept her secrets. But now she is returningwith her grown daughter to Scotland's majestic mist-shrouded hills. HereClaire plans to reveal a truth as stunning as the events that gave it birth: about the mystery of an ancient circle of standing stones ...about a love thattranscends the boundaries of time ...and about James Fraser, a Scottish warriorwhose gallantry once drew a young Claire from the security of her century tothe dangers of his ....

Now a legacy of blood and desire will test her beautiful copper-haireddaughter, Brianna, as Claire's spellbinding journey of self-discovery continuesin the intrigue-ridden Paris court of Charles Stuart ...in a race to thwart adoomed Highlands uprising ...and in a desperate fight to save both the childand the man she loves....

"A judicious blend of history and romance...proves that, regarding talent, Diana Gabaldon is light-years ahead of her romance-novelist colleagues."

From Library Journal
This time-traveling romantic adventure will please fans who have been waiting for the further adventures of Dr. Claire Beauchamp Randall, a 20th-century American who goes to Scotland in search of her 18th-century husband, virile Scot Jamie Fraser, whom she met and married in Outlander ( LJ 7/91). Book 2 of a planned trilogy takes readers along on Randall's quest, as she hopes to find a state or time (like that of the title's dragonfly suspended in a piece of amber) where Fraser still exists. This imaginative novel suffers somewhat from the author's overuse of personification ("spectacles gleaming with concern and curiosity") and her confusing switches between the two first-person narrations, which sometimes cloud an otherwise intriguing adventure. But Outlander 's readers will still devour this hefty volume without complaint.

From Kirkus Reviews
An engaging time-travel romance, the second of a trilogy (after Outlander, 1991), that animates the people and politics of a pivotal period in history--while turning up the heat between an appealing modern heroine and a magnetic romantic hero. It's now 1968, and Claire Beauchamp Randall has returned to Inverness, Scotland, with her daughter, Brianna. This is Claire's first visit back since she and husband Frank visited 22 years before--when she walked through a Druid stone circle into the middle of the 18th century. Now, Frank is dead, and Claire hopes to learn what happened to the second great love of her life--gallant Jamie Fraser, laird of Lallybroch whom she married during her journey into the past. She's also looking for a way to tell Brianna who her real father is. Framed by these dilemmas, the bulk of the story consists of the second installment of Claire and Jamie's adventures. Escaping the English death sentence passed against Jamie, they flee to prerevolutionary Paris, where they secretly work at foiling Bonnie Prince Charlie's efforts to regain the Scottish throne. But this espionage is only the beginning...A most entertaining mix of history and fantasy whose author, like its heroine, exhibits a winning combination of vivid imagination and good common sense. -- Copyright 1992, Kirkus Associates, LP. Not My Genre, But I'm Hooked (Book 2)
By Kat
I know there is some back-and-forth about just WHAT genre these stories are, so my review title is odd but it was the easiest way to summarize. I seldom read series especially when they're huge books (not enough time to read that adds to it being difficult to keep track of storyline); I never read romance and usually only read historical fiction that has been selected by my book club. I like time travel and alternate history, but that isn't what this is. Recent favorite books - Life After Life and Girl On A Train.

Don't know if I could get into this book series without the images of the actors from the Starz TV Show, but with those firmly in mind, I am greatly enjoying the books. And even though there are differences between the book and the TV adaptation, it does help me keep track of who is who.

There are occasional poor editing points that jump up (twice in two pages a pregnant woman comments she hasn't eaten since breakfast - and the second time isn't "STILL hadn't eaten" or any acknowledgment that she shared this information just a couple of paragraphs (and a few hours in the story). I KNOW THIS IS REALLY MINOR, don't yell at me, it is one of about a dozen examples where I went back and reread the previous paragraph/page thinking I must have read it wrong.

When the book tips from Historical Fiction to Historical Romance, i.e. the sex scenes, I feel just a little silly reading them - but that's where the actors from the TV series in my mind really helps.

And when I read the last page last night, I immediately picked up the next book in the series and started reading it.

Adventure, intrigue, romance, treachery, heartbreak, and tragedy around every corner
By Mary Dieterich
I can see why this series and especially this book is well-suited to episodic television. It took me several weeks to read, even though I was reading large chunks at a time. There is adventure, intrigue, romance, treachery, heartbreak, and tragedy around every corner. Just when you think Jamie and Claire might get to have a little peace--nope--it's on to the next crisis!

There is a lot of explanation and description in between those action scenes. It makes the book very long, but it gives you so much depth that you can actually see the Paris streets and palaces and the Scottish farms, cottages, and towns. I wanted the book to move quicker, but I appreciated all the historical detail and the development of even the minor characters.

I'd recommend it to anyone who's into sweeping historical sagas. As this is a part of a series, don't expect a neat and tidy ending. It's just enough to tide you over until the next book.

Have your heart handed to ye...
By CaLuHa KRAL
This is a bewildering and titillating part of their story, the Sassenach's and the Laird of Lollybroch's as well as Claire's other life... One now may clicheishly say something like "a past life", "the wrong place at the wrong time", or perhaps a bit more "the right place at the right time" during a reference to something one cannot fully coherently account for into the ordinary that is comfortable and known of the mere everyday. So here is this sort of presentation of all three of those cliches into one and then turned inside out, cocked and turned and twisted just so so that you don't know where the upside or downside is just yet. Perhaps in the next chapter. Will we know in the next book? Apologies... A beautifully written and fully-captivating story of love, fear, hatred, betrayal, purest of promises and undying love. Thank you Diana. I am a captive fan!
