Fiber optics has assumed a dominant place among the available technologies to slake the ever-growing worldwide thirst for bandwidth. As miles and miles of optical fiber cable is being buried underground and under the sea, the demand for those capable of designing and installing fiber-optic systems has also grown. This book gathers all the essential information needed by the network architects, engineers, and craftspeople who plan, install, and maintain fiber-optic systems.

Requiring only a basic math and physics background, Fiber-Optic Systems for Telecommunications acts as both a tutorial and practical reference on both theory and practical applications.

It discusses:
* Loss-limited and dispersion-limited fiber links
* Optical networking
* Availability and survivability of fiber-optic networks
* Dense wave-division multiplexing (DWDM)
* Light transmission impairments, including Brillioun scattering, Raman scattering, four-wave mixing, polarization mode dispersion (PMD), and other non-linear effects
* Hybrid fiber-coax CATV networks
* Fiber-optic link budgets and tradeoffs

The text stresses design methods for achieving advanced performance on fiber-optic systems inside cost-effective limits. At the same time, a good dose of practical application is provided to the reader. For example, there is an extensive section on the application of an OTDR (optical time domain reflectometer) for performance measurement and troubleshooting of optical systems.

The book examines the maximum capacity of high-quality single-mode fiber. Here, the ITU has made some major contributions in this arena in their G.650 and G.950 recommendations. The author describes the ITU "grid" or wavelength assignment chart for the 1550 nm band. How close can these light carriers be placed before serious performance degradation occurs? He describes ultimate bit rate capacity in this band alone in the hundred of terabits reaching a final bit rate capacity possibly in the low thousands of terabits per second. The author communicates the excitement of such research in his writing.

About the Author
ROGER L. FREEMAN is a widely recognized expert in telecommunications systems engineering, with over forty-five years of experience in the field. He is the founder and principal of Roger Freeman Associates, a senior life member of the IEEE, and a member of the SCTE. Previous to this Mr. Freeman was principal engineer for advanced system planning at the Raytheon Company; technical manager of ITT Marine, Europe, and staff consultant for ITT Laboratories, Madrid, Spain, and ITU Regional Planning Expert for Northern South America.

Great story, great message

I read this series back in February of 2013. But, I remember everything! My review was this...

Oh my thoughts could just run wild thinking about Luca. Wow this book was hot, sexy, honest, and relateable. I loved not only the story but also the message Jasinda sends to your not so thin girls. This book is a book about your average girl by average I mean not stick thin (cause lets face it not every girl has a perfect body). She does an amazing job at delivering a wonderful romantic story (yet again) but also sending messages to the readers. She tells you to love yourself for who you are...be happy with yourself.

That being said...I think you should read this book for sure. Jasinda is becoming more and more my favorite author with every book I read. She is a wonderfully skilled writer that is for certain. I guarantee that you will not only fall in love with the stories that she writes, but also the messages and confidence her books will give you!!!
Now go enjoy some amazingly epic writing and see for yourself!

One of my favorite series.

This was the first series I had ever read by Jasinda Wilder. It continues to be my favorite out of all of her books. I believe this series deserves more recognition. I loved seeing Delilah grow through her struggles. The struggles only made her stronger. I also loved Luca and his family. They are a close knit group that treated Delilah as one of their own, even though they didn't have to.

David A. Vogel is founder and president of Intertech Engineering Associates, Inc. in Westwood, Massachusetts. The company specializes in the management of hardware and embedded software development and verification/validation projects for medical devices. He has also served as principal bioengineer at Becton Dickinson Medical Systems, and as software engineer for Honeywell Information Systems. He has earned degrees in biomedical engineering and computer science from the University of Michigan and Massachusetts Institute of Technology.

Practical, Insightful and Readable

First, a disclaimer. I've worked for Dave Vogel for the past 23 years. I was hired during my University Co-Op Education days and have been with Intertech Engineering (the company Dave Vogel founded in 1982) ever since. There is a reason I've stayed - Intertech gets it right. And, fortunately, so does this book.

If I were asked to name reading material that would be a sure-fire cure for insomnia, you can bet the FDA's Regulation and Guidance documents (21 CFR 820 and GPSV) would be high on the list. Those regulations and guidance documents are frequently mired in difficult to understand language and, occasionally, contradictory suggestions. For years we struggled as a company to institute a quality process that is both compliant and practical (this later desire is actually the harder of the two). Over the years we've seen the highs and lows when it comes to Verification & Validation of Medical Device Software and we've learned more than a few things along the way. Much of what we've learned has been laid out beautifully in this book. Very little of the technical content surprised me here - we've been living and using this stuff for many years now. What did surprise me was the approachable and highly readable style of the book. Pulling in relevant sections of the Regulatory code and guidance along with advice and examples, the book lays out not only the "hows" but the "whys" when it comes to Verification & Validation. The no-nonsense approach should be a perfect fit for people who want a hands-on approach to thinking through their quality systems and has plenty of advice to guard against over-engineering the process (or worse, taking shortcuts to avoid the hard decisions). The book doesn't bog down in technical detail nor does it float along in abstract theory which makes it practical for the vast majority of readers. Dave is neither pretentious nor preachy in his writing style and I've found the book to be a welcome companion here in the workplace. If you're feeling lost, confused or frightened when it comes to Verification & Validation of Medical Device Software (and you're certainly not alone), I'd highly recommend you give this a read-through. I suspect you'll find it to be a valuable addition to your professional library.

First of its kind book - highly recommended

This book is a fantastic resource for software developers, quality engineers, and technical managers working with software related to medical devices. Not only is the book comprehensive and detailed, it is also very well organized and readable. I have worked with medical device software for a large part of the past 25 years, and for the past four years have developed non-device software for medical device manufacturing test. For me this book does an excellent job of interpreting and explaining how to comply with regulatory requirements. Because of the author's credentials and frequent referencing of FDA documents and other standards, the book stands up as a very credible reference.

My only two quibbles with the book are tiny: First, it contains quite a few typographic errors, apparently artifacts of the final editing process. The meaning is always clear, but one more proof-reading would have helped. Second, the author spends too many pages addressing software testing, something that is not unique to medical software and would be better left to other books. Both of these faults are easy to ignore.

I have been looking for a good reference book on this subject for years, and this is the first I have found. I read it pretty much cover-to-cover over two weeks, and have recommended it to my colleagues. I am delighted with this book and recommend it highly.

A healthy dose of perspective on every page. David Vogel's book is a gem for those new to the field. I've been working in this arena for only five years, and I have found the book to be extremely helpful. I keep catching myself thinking, "Wish I'd known this four years ago!"

Tiffany Snow hit it out of the park with this one!

Once again, I have finished a novel written by Tiffany Snow and I find myself awestruck. Power Play, the first installment of the Risky Business Series was everything I expected from the talented Ms. Snow plus so much more. If I had to sum up book one of this series, it would be The Kathleen Turner Series on steroids. It's bigger and better than before with more drama, more romance, and more suspense – just more of everything that I came to love in the other series.

Instead of two brothers, we have two former best friends. I say former because they both use to be in love with the same woman – a woman who took her own life because she could not stand to come between the two friends. But what she didn't know is her death tore these two men apart more than ever. These two men are Ryker, a police detective, and Parker, an investment banker. Both men are swoon worthy, but I must admit that Ryker has stolen my heart. This man is the bad boy type that I find myself drawn to who is sex personified and such a smooth talker. Yep, my heart is with Ryker. I’m not sure how I feel about Parker yet. Yes, he is one sexy man, but I just don’t know how I feel about him yet – so I guess you can say that the jury is still out as far as Parker is concerned.

Then we have Sage Reese, Administrative Assistant to Parker. She has been so in love with Parker since day one of her employment and is obsessively dedicated to this man. She does everything possible to make Parker’s work life flow smoothly. It’s not until Parker comes under scrutiny due to a big investment deal involving some shady Russian characters that Ryker is on Sage’s radar, and suddenly her love for Parker is not so clear cut.

After all the drama and intensity that was never ending, book one ends and it appears that Sage’s decision on which man she is going to choose is pretty clear cut, but then in the final pages we learn that maybe, just maybe, one of the two men wants much, much more than we previously thought. So yes, we have a love triangle which may turn some readers off, but I must say I loved trying to guess who will end up with whom.

I absolutely loved this book! I finished this one in about a day because I just couldn't put it down. It kept me guessing throughout and I was biting my nails because of all the high stakes drama that took place. This well-crafted novel had a lot of suspense with just the right amount of romance. There are plenty of twists and turns that kept me engaged throughout. Tiffany Snow hit it out of the park with this one and I can’t wait for Playing Dirty to be released.

If you loved The Kathleen Turner Series or just love a good romantic suspenseful story with lots of high stakes drama and hot, steamy romance then you’re going to love this new series.

Another hot triangle from Tiffany Snow

From the moment that I read the blurb for this book, I was excited. It sounded just like the kind of story that I would like and reminded me so much of one of my favorite will-they or won't they couples on television, Suits’ Harvey and Donna. The ambitious, smart, handsome, charming boss with the indispensible secretary (Sorry, Sage, I should say Administrative Assistant). The woman that knows him better than himself. The woman that he couldn't be without. So, knowing all of that, I was absolutely jumping up and down and ready to read this.

But, I had a moment of pause, when I saw that this was going to be a love triangle. I still haven't recovered from Tiffany Snow's last love triangle, The Kathleen Turner Series.
I vowed I would go into this, though, with an open mind and I would not pick a side right off the bat. I was not going to subject myself to that sort of heartbreak again. There are those who will say, it's just a book. Get over it. But, you cannot just get over it with a Tiffany Snow book. She has a way of writing characters that you genuinely care about. Characters that you identify with or characters that you just want to be with. Not too many readers have that gift, but Tiffany does.

So, because of Tiffany, Blane Kirk has and always will be the book boyfriend I judge all others by. I honestly did not think anyone could come close to him.

Well, let me introduce you to Parker Anderson.

He is Harvey Specter-esque with some Blane-like qualities. So, my promise to not get too emotionally invested or pick a side this time? Well, yeah, that's out the window.

I am firmly in Team Parker. We see him through his Girl Friday, Sage Reese's eyes. She doesn't want to be the stereotypical, clich�d secretary crushing on the boss. She fights her feelings
and tries to dismiss them knowing that something between them could never work. Yet, he calls and she comes running. This is done to humorous effect in the first chapter when Sage's night out
with her current boyfriend is interrupted by Parker. So Mr. Wrong breaks up with Sage telling her that she’s already in a relationship with her boss even though she doesn’t seem to know it.

And the other third of this triangle? Hot cop Dean Ryker. He comes off as the typical bad boy. Sage is immediately attracted to him even though she senses the hostility between him and Parker. Is Ryker flirting with her just to get under Parker’s skin? Is he using her to work an angle on his latest case?
Throw in the obvious bad blood between the former friends that stems from fighting over the same girl. Will this cycle repeat itself? You know it will! But, the ride will hopefully be as fun and romantic as Tiffany Snow books always are. There's some fun banter between Ryker and Parker as they trade one-liners and there's quite a funny scene where Sage breaks up one of these fights as the two mean play a comical game of “I know you are, but what am I?”

This book had it all---fun, romance, intrigue, suspense and humor. Sage makes a choice in this book, but I feel that just might be temporary. Don't count the other guy out just yet.
I have a feeling that this series will join the Kathleen Turner series as one of my all-time favorites.

Tiffany Snow is BACK!

I always know when I crack open a Tiffany Snow book that I am in for an epic and memorable read. She’s a force of nature in the RS genre with her suspenseful storyline’s, alpha-men, like-able heroine’s and she always delivers a love-triangle that keeps your gut clenched and your heart racing.

Power Play is set in Chicago where our heroine Sage is a secretary…I mean administrative assistant (sorry Sage) to Parker who’s a power player…and hot as hell! She’s practically at his beck-and-call,from paying his bills to being his personal errand girl and being on call 24-7. She’s very loyal and has a super soft side to Parker but it’s all very professional especially since he seems to only see her as his employee and nothing more.When a detective shows up at the office and Sage notices there is a rift between the two men she becomes intrigued especially when Ryker ask’s her out on a date, she can’t refuse. And that’s when this novel hits into high gear!

I loved Sage’s character as well as the guys! They are such opposites but I fell for both of them even though at times I wanted to smack each one upside the head. Parker with his mixed messages and Ryker with his hard-on against his former BFF. Sage handles these two fairly well especially once she finds herself a target and these two gentlemen’s bossiness comes into play.

Power Play does not end in a cliffhanger but there is way more to this story which the next in this series, Playing Dirty, is set to release in September!

Mark Ciampa is Assistant Professor of Computer Information Systems at Western Kentucky University in Bowling Green, Kentucky. Previously, he served as Associate Professor and Director of Academic Computing for 20 years at Volunteer State Community College in Gallatin, Tennessee. Dr. Ciampa has worked in the IT industry as a computer consultant for the U.S. Postal Service, the Tennessee Municipal Technical Advisory Service, and the University of Tennessee. He is also the author of many Cengage/Course Technology books, including Security+ Guide to Network Security Fundamentals; CWNA Guide to Wireless LANs, 3e; CWSP Guide to Wireless Security; Guide to Wireless Communications; and Networking BASICS. He holds a PhD in digital communication systems from Indiana State University.

Decent book, but not for the price

I needed it for a class, but most of the material was similar to the previous edition with some minor changes. A lot of the cases and exercises were outdated and there were several instances where the answers were wrong at the end of each chapter.

The access code didn't work and I had to contact the publisher to find a solution. Overall I believe the book to be way overpriced.

Half way thru the book. Very informative. Concepts are conveyed in an easy to read format. Supplemental resources are super helpful. Great end of chapter exercises to reinforce what you have covered.
