Hobbled online reference book.

Elsevier, in collaboration with Inkling, has crippled online access to this reference. Until February, 2014, Elsevier's ExpertConsultBook online reference books have been fantastic - easy to navigate, intuitive to search across your titles, and efficient to use. Elsevier has shut that down and replaced it with Inkling's clumsy e-book reader. Easy to read. Not easy to use as online reference to find answers to particular diagnostic problems.

With ExpertConsult/Inkling you can no longer search across your purchased books at one go. You have to open and search within each book individually. Open your online book and you get three columns: a navigation column with list of chapters, a reading column, and a notes column (wasting valuable screen space). You have to click the search icon to get a text entry box. Search results then replace the index in the navigation column, 10 at a time, 4-5 visible on a typical computer screen. To review your search results you have to scroll down through the first 10, then click next, then scroll down through the next 10, then click next, ten at a time. The contexts of individual search results are obscure. It shows a little text where your search term appears, but not which chapter or section it is in. Figures (often lots of them) are included in your results list. Individual search results are headed with figure numbers (not caption, not chapter or section heading) or sub-section titles. Even in the reading pane you can't see chapter and section titles, so you don't know what part of the book you're in. You are limited to linear access through the book - with links to previous and next sections at the top and bottom of the reading pane. To get to the next sub-section you have to scroll down to the bottom of the current sub-section. In order to navigate the index to different chapters or sections you have to exit your search results to get back the index pane.

Still THE gold standard soft tissue pathology textbook

After all these years, Enzinger and Weiss's Soft Tissue Tumors remains THE gold standard soft tissue pathology textbook. From numerous beautiful histologic images to detailed nuanced discussions cover the broad spectrum of soft tissue tumors, this book has it all. I always keep it handy and look to it often while examining soft tissue pathology cases (I work at a University hospital with a sarcoma treatment center and I also run a bone and soft tissue pathology consult service, so I see soft tissue pathology cases daily). I actually find the ExpertConsult online service to be useful overall, although I would agree with the other reviewer who noted that there are multiple issues with the format of the online service, most notably a clunky and sometimes inaccurate search functionality. The concept is great, but the execution leaves much to be desired. I hope that this will be improved over time. However, any reviewer who would give Enzinger and Weiss only 1 star just because of issues with the online version has diminished credibility in my eyes and is being unfair to both the authors and to potential future buyers.

A daunting task admirably done...

Recording 200+ years of East India Company history is no small feat for, in such a work, this far-flung commercial enterprise produces a litany of ships, ports, merchandise, employees, currencies, costs, indigenous rulers, company directors, parliamentarians, military men, privateers, and scalawags. That John Keay kept it straight is admirable. That the reader can is even more so.

The Honourable Company is a witty, insightful and, at times, painstakingly detailed account of the East India Company's cyclical expansion, retraction, retrenchment, and re-expansion over the course of three centuries. From the island of St. Helena to Canton, China, Keay patiently plots the monopoly's course. Ever eager to highlight the irony, inanity, and ignominy characteristic of such an enterprise, Keay provides several humorous asides in addition to those moments when the reader can't but shake his head at these haughty, ill-informed, greedy and grasping monopolists.

Well-researched, well-written, and a delight to consume, The Honourable Company suffers only when the blander details of global trade begin to inhibit it's otherwise excellent pace. The sheer volume of material required to catalog an endeavor of this magnitude makes it difficult to entice the reader page after page. Yet, John Keay pulls it off smartly and for this The Honourable Company merits a rating of 4+ stars.

good writer - book could have been better

At times I loved the writing. Plenty of great, amazing, 17th century adventure stories. It got hard to keep track of the characters. He fails to step back often enough and remind the reader of the broader patterns. In fact, I'm not sure he sees them himself. Plenty of material on British insensitive arrogance. Page 308 f is a hilarious story. I was unaware of how the French and British jostled for power in India in the 1700s. It would have been better with more maps and illustrations inserted at appropriate places. See page 424 for unfair cynicism. Much mockery of the company and its leaders. The title of the book is itself a mockery. This book is a reaction against the older, hero-oriented British imperial histories.

About the Author

Kenneth Libbrecht is a professor of physics at Caltech, where he studies the molecular dynamics of crystal growth, especially how ice crystals grow from water vapor, which is essentially the physics of snowflakes. He has authored several books on this topic, including The Snowflake: Winter's Secret Beauty, The Snowflake: Winter's Frozen Artistry, The Art of the Snowflake, and Field Guide to Snowflakes. Dr. Libbrecht served as science consultant on the Disney film Frozen. He lives in Pasadena with his wife, Rachel Wing. They have two children.

Rachel Wing is a park ranger for the city of Monrovia, California, at the foot of the San Gabriel Mountains. With a background in geology, she now specializes in balancing wilderness preservation with wildfire safety for nearby residents. Rachel loves to hike and climb in these hills, especially on the rare occasions when snow graces our desert-like plants. She has been accompanying Ken Libbrecht as a snowflake chaser for nearly 20 years.

A gorgeous book with hundreds of close-up photographs of snowflakes of incredible variety. Such a great gift for honeymooners!

My husband and I purchased these ( both Do you know your groom & Do you know your bride) shortly after getting married. They were entertaining and left us feeling informed and good that we knew so much about each other. We giggled a lot...well my husband chortled and I giggled :). Since then we have purchase several sets of these for couples as wedding gifts. They are the perfect activity for that plane ride to a honeymoon destination.

A lot of fun!

I received this as a gift and couldn't wait to get home and try it out on my fianc�. It was a lot of fun! Even after six years of dating, some of these questions I didn't know, they're so out there. But it was great. We laughed a lot and playfully argued over partial credit. I just ordered Do You Know Your Bride-it's his turn!
