FUNNIER THAN HOLY HELL!!

This is one of P.G. Wodehouses's best books. Although he's never turned a tale anything but excellently, this is somehow more endearing than most. It starts out normal enough, with a man who just became an earl (Reginald, third Earl of Havershot) going off to Hollywood to save his alcoholic cousin from the deadly drink. He meets an actress by the name of April June, the very embodiment of virtue, on the way there-- or so he thinks. He also runs into his ex- finacee, whose engagement to him he bungled by way of a little accident with a cigar. After some very cold ice cream, he needs to have a tooth pulled. In the dentist's waiting room he meets little Joey Cooley, the child actor, Idol of American Motherhood, who will be undergoing the same torture as him. Well, both souls get administered some laughing gas, and this gives them the ability to be masters of the art of astral projection. But the thing is, little mischevious Joey puts his soul into Reggie's body, rather then his own. Reggie then has no choice but to inhabit the body of the child star with the golden curls. Now we've got a dilemma. See, Joey wants to poke everyone in the snout, and in Reggie's body, now has the strength to do so with optimum results. Uh-oh. And now Reggie is left with the mind of a grown man, but the mean Miss Brinkmeyer (the "tall, rangy, light-heavyweight, severe of aspect' woman with whom he shares a mutal hatred...animus is in the air) and all other of Cooley's keepers, who treat him like the eleven-year-old child they think he is. Double uh-oh.
This book is one of the funniest things I've ever read, not only because Wodehouse is a master of the English language and shows such a conatagious affection for it, but because it's a very zany tale that never fails to make you laugh and keep a smile on your face all day. There are so many more hilarious moments in this book, and not a page goes by without a good, hearty chuckle. I would highly recommend this book and all of Wodehouse's books, for that matter.

Read this before your next dentist visit

Laughing Gas was the first Wodehouse I ever read. I knew his work through some Jeeves tales (and their TV adaptations), but I had never ventured outside of those characters. Seeing that the storyline was somewhat like the Freaky Friday genre of films, I wanted to see what Wodehouse would do with this already familiar plot. I was not disappointed and I have gone back to him whenever I wanted something to make me laugh--as long as it's not an audiobook read by Jonathan Cecil!
Reginald, Third Earl of Havershot (gotta love those Wodehouse puns) finds himself in the dentist's chair after an embarrassing incident seated next to child star Joey Cooley ("Idol of American Motherhood"), going through the same procedure. After the administration of some of the titular anesthetic, the two have an out-of-body experience. The mischievous Cooley, however, instead of returning to his own corporeal form, slips into Reggie's, leaving our hero left with the tot's as his only choice. Hilarity ensues, as they say, as little Joey likes to go around punching people in the nose and continues to do so under the guise of Reggie. Meanwhile Reggie is party to the stories going around about "his" behavior and is powerless to stop them while in his current pint-sized form.
Wodehouse takes this in all of the expected directions and invents a few new ones, to boot, making Laughing Gas one of his best novels. Well, one of the best I've read, anyway.

Wodehouse's usual skill with the turn of phrase and the unlikely situation makes this book a delight. It's atypical of his work in that it contains a fantastic element: a grown man and a bratty child, visiting a dentist at the same time, accidentally have their souls switched while under the ether.

Battle Group Kursk, an elegant rule-set for Eastern Front WWII gaming.

Battle Group Kursk offers up a great game with a strong emphasis on command and control and on the historical character of the fight for the Kursk Salient in the summer of 1943.

The name 'Battle Group' gives a hint to what this family of rules is all about; achieve your goals while pushing your combined arms fighting group as far as you can.

The game is not about fighting to the last man for an unrealistic victory; you need to marshal your infantry, armour and artillery to break your opponent before they break you. To achieve this the morale mechanics work at two levels, affecting both individual units and your entire force. Unit experience levels allow for granularity in troop quality and morale without over complicating an elegant and easy to play set of rules.

An aspect of the Battle Group series I very much appreciate is that firing to suppress your enemy is just as important as getting kills. The more you play this game, the more you come to realise that the abstractions are all in the right places and to the right degree. This is an engaging and fast moving game yet it still obtains historically appropriate outcomes.

'BGK' is played at a one-to-one ratio, so one figure or one model is one man or one vehicle. The game plays very well at the reinforced platoon to company level, allowing for big games to be played with ease. Aside from a suitable collection of miniatures and terrain in either 15mm or 20mm (1/72) scales, you will also need a handful of ordinary six-sided dice and a measuring tape to get playing.

This family of rules (yup, there will be more to come...) features a points based 'pick-up game' system, but don't let that mislead you: BGK provides all the data you need to play serious historical scenarios. So you can make good use of the excellent scenario material already on the market - Skirmish Elite, I'm looking at you.

If you are new to the wargames hobby, this is a perfect place to begin! ALL the information you need to get going is inside this big, big book. More than just rules, BGK features history, army lists and useful hobby guides to help you build up a fine collection of gaming figures and vehicles.

TLDR: An elegant set of rules by an established and competent rulesmith. BIG book loaded with wargames eyecandy and quality information. Recommended.

Like children with other learning differences, gifted children often need specialized curriculum and support in order to achieve academic and social success throughout their school experiences. Gifted children have exceptional abilities in one or more learning domains (e.g., mathematics, music, athletics). Without coaching or special support these children may become bored or frustrated with school. They may develop poor work and study habits. Gifted students may feel out of place with same-age peers, seeking friendships with older children who share their interests. Early enrichment and intervention is important in order to set learning patterns for any child with special abilities or needs. Early identification can make a significant difference to a child who is a gifted learner.

The Gifted and Talented Series by Gifted Games (Gateway Gifted Resources) helps prepare young children for Gifted and Talented testing (NNAT2, OLSAT, and COGAT). These fun workbooks are developmentally appropriate for young children and offer practice opportunities for testing in reasoning, problem solving, and cognitive tasks. To keep children motivated and make learning fun, the test prep books use a detective theme “Gifted Detective Agency” as an incentive to finish the workbooks.

Each workbook targets one or more TAG tests. The workbooks have 5 parts, each designed to prepare a young child for gifted and talented tests.
(1) The introduction provides an overview of TAG tests covered in the workbook. Information is provided about the workbook, test taking tips, and information on the “Gifted Detective agency.”
(2) The workbook Section consists of skill building activities and exercises similar to ones in the tests.

Prepares your child for taking the Otis-Lennon School Ability Test- Level A. The OLSAT measures a child’s abilities on several cognitive and verbal tasks. The workbook is a fun and valuable resource to prepare children for the OLSAT. The workbook questions are designed (patterns, figures, shapes, and colors) to simulate the test taking experience. On a very fundamental level familiarizing your child with test taking, test format, and the questions will aid in the test taking experience and facilitate their comfort by mastery of “test taking skills” so that your child can demonstrate their abilities and knowledge.

The Gifted and Talented Workbook is a wonderful resource for parents and children. In addition to the academic value there is also the benefit of working together with your child so you can understand their learning style, interests, and abilities. Most importantly completing the workbook with your child is just plain fun! As an early childhood educator and researcher I highly recommend the OLSAT Gifted and Talented Workbook (and the whole series!)

a fantastic book for preparing kids to take the OLSAT

This is a fantastic book for preparing kids to take G&T exams and the OLSAT. I also bought the NNAT book by the same publisher. The design is really appealing to young kids and keeps them engaged. Highly recommend.

Terrific OLSAT Level A Prep Workbook

This workbook includes 200 practice questions for the OLSAT Level A test, which is a test to help determine whether your child is a candidate for a gifted level curriculum. This workbook is geared for children in preschool and kindergarten. Parents are to work with their children to ensure they understand how to listen, follow directions and focus on the task at hand.

The OLSAT Level A test is a one hour test and has 40 questions for pre-K and 60 questions for the kindergarten level. The actual test is in black and white. This workbook has some color to engage kids but also gives them practice in black and white questions.

The OLSAT tests both verbal and nonverbal abilities. Children are expected to master quite a few skills including following directions, classifying objects, seeing analogies and patterns, reasoning, understanding spatial concepts, as well as understanding the meaning of words.

To add to the incentive to complete the workbook, children who finish the workbook will become members of the Gifted Detective Agency and will be awarded a personal certificate.

Answer keys and directions are in the back of the book.

A better title would be: "A Guide to Thinking Through and Creating Arduino-Powered Solutions"

This book is a great guide for getting started with Arduino. Feel free to disregard the "for ham radio" part of the title. Some of the projects are rather specialized to ham radio, but the introductory sections are written for anybody. The projects that I've ordered parts for are not going to be used in ham radio service, like the solar battery charge monitor and the GPS. The great part about each project chapter is that it isn't presented as a recipe, like step 1: do this, etc. Instead, it's more like a story, along the lines of "I set out to do this, and I tried this, and that didn't work out, so I did this, and this is why I did that," etc. This is so valuable because it is a peek into the thought process, rather than just a set of instructions. This is a great book for someone who wants to learn how to think, not just how to build. If I were to scrape for anything to complain about, it would be that the author and I have differing opinions on what qualifies as cheap. For instance, the text to speech module seems to be around $50.

excellent cookbook

Excellent cookbook of Arduino projects. Starts with a good overview of the Arduino capabilities, especially the IO, then discusses tools for writing code and documenting projects. Then the remainder of the book shows all the details of about 18 projects. Notes with each include coding tips, good use of libraries, connection methods and ideas for expansion.

This book is a $30 book of ideas.

I believe the author built these projects, and I believe that they probably function, but where I was disappointed was the lack of step-by-step build process of each of these projects.

Yes I can go to a website and download the sketches (helpful and saves me from coding them myself), but I expected this to do a rundown of all the parts I needed, as well as what was done to come up with each component required to make this actually work.

It seems some hogwarts magic was used from the explanation of what each project does, some of the fritzing diagrams, to "POOF" completed project and weblinks to find the sketches.

What's missing is the actual step by step in how they built it.

Kind of a huge missing link for me.

I know that I can find other places to get this (Youtube, arduino.cc, etc) but for a $30 book I'm expecting a "tell-all".

This has insured that I won't be buying the Arduino and Picaxe book.

A valuable reference book, but not a complete text

I greatly enjoyed this book and learned from it. I generally agree with the enthusiasm of other reviewers. The writing style is wonderfully entertaining, whether you are interested in becoming a sculptor or you just wish to learn about small sculptures and collectible action figures. The cartoons are priceless!! I especially liked the cartoon of Athena and her owl sitting in a waiting room.

I have several reservations:

1. From the text I could not understand how "pivot joints" and "ball joints" would hold a figure together. It appeared that articulated figures joined in this manner would easily fall apart. Probably this isn't true, but the process as explained is not completely clear and I would like much more detail.

2. There was not much material on sculpting with epoxy clays, which I see as very valuable and versatile material, less messy and demanding than wax or clay, usable both by hobbyists making or modifying a single character and by production modelers. I find such clays to be both cleaner, less expensive (for permanent pieces) and easier to work than the materials the book primarily focused on.

3. It would have been helpful if the book had included a comprehensive resource list, identifying many suppliers and providing web site links.

4. It would have been helpful if the book had included a bibliography of recommended further readings.

5. The book did not include a great deal of information on sculpting techniques. I suspect sculpting small parts accurately and in proportion will be difficult for many beginning sculptors. Such information is important.

Recommendations:

I suggest the Katherine Dewey book on "Lifelike figures in polymer clay" as a companion reference- Amazon apparently agrees.

I recommend the "Smooth-On" "Polytek" and "Alumilite" websites as rich sources for more information on modeling, molding, and casting with modern plastic materials. Look at the pictures, watch the viddies, and LEARN!! There is much more to RTV silicone molding than the present book book presented.

I am especially impressed by Smooth-On's epoxy modeling putties in various hardnesses and densities.

That said, immediately after reading this book I went to my friendly neighborhood comic shop (they also carry figures), and recommended they stock the book and display it prominently. Buy this book- then keep sculpting and keep reading!!

Incredible book that could use a bit more editing

Wow, I have spent countless hours trying to learn as much as possible about this industry and trying to complete some good works. This book blows all of my knowledge out of the water. It should be noted that in order to really "follow along" with the project presented in the book you will need A LOT of supplies. pressure pot, compressor, wax pen, camping stove, rubber mold materials, resins, the list goes on but all of it is required to get the job done. A very daunting task indeed.
The book is very well written with lots of witty comments and animations. I have only had it for 2 days and am nearly done with it because I love to read it so much. It makes the process seem much easier than it is and encourages me to spend more time in the studio.
My only gripe would be that their is a lot of editing issues, missing words, odd image references est but its no biggy. The pictures are as a whole very good with only a few blurry spots here and there. It is certainly a must buy for anyone interested in the industry of Toys.

AWESOME!

I had this book on my "Wish List", hesitating because these guys are so obviously WAY AHEAD of me and I will never, ever catch up. I just started polymer a year ago and found myself gravitating towards sculpture, which I've never done before, and moving pretty fast on acquiring skills. But there is so much to learn...just like anything else. So the book kept drawing me in until I bought it. And I was so glad I finally gave in. First of all, the book's quality is top notch. The photos are large so detail can be studied at leisure. The color quality is great. The techniques are completely comprehensive...down to earth, easy to understand with loads of photos on procedure. Second, the writing style is great. You are put at ease from the first. The tone is laid back and full of wry humor (just my kind) but it is obvious these guys are SERIOUS artists, aside from their credentials, and that they totally enjoy their work and admire it and each others as well. Third, I appreciate the fact that they let you know the kind of mistakes they themselves have made. They certainly do not put themselves on a pedestal and, in poking fun at themselves, make the student feel at ease about making his/her own. The sense of comradery is totally evident. And, as a woman, I appreciate that a woman is included in the group and given extreme honor as to her position in the field. Fourth, there are chapters on doing business as an artist and even photographing your own work. I bought several books on desk top photography, etc. and they are all good. But this one was sweet and simple and pulled it all together for me. Fifth, even though each of these artists works a different medium and I only am doing polymer right now, I garnered invaluable information just by skimming thru the first time I opened it. Last, this book has become my main textbook for sculpture so far. The more I look and read the more I find. I seriously recommend it for anyone that aspires to be a master at this craft. You will enjoy it tremendously.
