Excellent, concise resource

First of all, let me start out by identifying myself as a devout Catholic evangelist. Over the past year, the study of comparative religion has interested me greatly, and at first, my approach to study was marred by the use of unreliable and biased resources. I made the mistake of trying to learn about Mormons by reading anti-Mormon literature. However, what I found there (in books such as The God Makers, Kingdom of the Cults, etc) was not only appalingly uncharible and vindictive, but also appalingly deceitful and false! Unimpressed with their rhetoric and straw men tactics, I decided instead to do what I should have done in the first place; ask the Mormons what they believe.
Aside from the BOM and D & C, this is the first resource I purchased. The layout was impressive - very easy to use, concise, and well cross referenced. I was at first dismayed at the lack of an index, but that became a moot point since the book is so well laid out. Furthermore, although I know this is of course not scripture any more than the writings of St. Thomas Aquinas are to Catholics, it does present a good yet fallible summary of, well, Mormon Doctrine. My only complaint is that McConkie is a bit too brief in covering some points, and doesn't always give references to relevant sections in the canonized books of the Mormon Church. Because of this, further study is not always easy to persue. On the pro side of that, this book can rightfully be considered a "primary source" when citing, by and large.
While I still disagree with many aspects of Mormon theology, at least now I can be confident that what I am stating on a particular point is actually what the LDS church believes. Persuing Mormon literature (and conversations with Mormons) prevented me from going down the fiery path of polemics and hatred for Mormons. As a Catholic, I know all too well what it is like to be on the receiving end of hatred and bigotry which roots itself in misunderstanding. As someone who is oftentimes on the receiving end of counter apologetics, I know well the difference between mere theological disagreement and outright bigotry. The distinction makes all the difference in the world when it comes to dialogue.
Persual of literature such as this will require some extra effort, yes, but it will also help you obey the commandment not to bear false witness. There is no excuse for lazy research.
Anyway - I fear that this book review had turned into an admonishment for my fellow apologists to be honest. However, since I think it needs to be said, and it does tie into this book in a sense, I'm keeping it here. In any case, if you want to learn about Mormonism, don't listen to idiots like Dave Hunt. Rather, you do well to start here for a good, reliable primer and a lasting resource.

The Book That Says It All...

The unusual thing about McConkie's Mormon Doctrine is that it has little to do with the loving, gentle image presented by the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints in its advertisements. Bruce McConkie's approach may be disconcerting to many non-LDS, but his candor makes Mormon Doctrine well worth the time.
I seriously recommend this volume to all those persons who are investigating the theology of the LDS simply because it addresses so many issues which will probably not be discussed during investigator classes and missionary meetings. In other words, practically all of the Gospel Doctrines of the Restored Church are presented in alphabetical order, with reference sources clearly noted. I personally feel that Mormon Doctrine is a wealth of information concerning one of the fastest growing Faiths in the world. So, if you are interested in learning more about "Intelligences", "Heavenly Parents", "Eternal Progression" and the "Father of God", Mormon Doctrine is the superb resource. Elder McConkie pulls no punches, and the clarity of his expositions on his Faith make his work understandable on all levels.
The style of Mormon Doctrine is very forthright, clear, and authoritative. Although at the very beginning of the book there is the caveat that Mormon Doctrine does not necessarily represent the views of the Church, and thus represents only the views of the author, the book is clearly one of the standard references in official Church publications, with references being made to it frequently in Sunday School manuals and other publications.
At this point, I must state that Elder McConkie's references to non-LDS Churches (and especially Roman Catholicism) tend to be rather harsh, so please keep that in mind when reading Mormon Doctrine.

A Great Resource

I grew up with several Mormon friends and my brother has converted to Mormonism. As a result I have had quite a few dialogs with Mormons. I found that I was woefully unprepared. So I began to study the Mormon religion. When I asked Mormons such as my brother about their beliefs I would get responses that were couched in terminology I as an "mainstream" Christian would find palatable. It was hard to find out what Mormon's really believed. I had other resources that were produced by "mainstream" Christians. However, these resources dealt with archaine theologies that while they are historically accurate are different from what most LDS believe today. MORMON DOCTRINES is an invaluable resourse to understand the current beliefs of the LDS Church.
The first step in being able to talk to someone about their faith is understanding their faith. This is especially important in being able to bridge the language gap between Mormonism and "Mainstream" Christianity. MORMON DOCTRINE is especially good for this due to its encyclopedic format. Common terms such as Salvation, God, The Holy Ghost and Heaven can clearly be examined.
While I strongly disagree with the doctrine promoted in MORMON DOCTRINE it is an indispensible resource for understanding what Mormons believe.

An Accessible, Complex Book on National Digital Security

There are a number of books available on the subjects of cyberwarfare, cybercrime, and state-sponsored espionage. The majority of these books tend to address only one of these subjects. The best of them provide nuanced, in-depth treatments of their subjects, but demand a specialized, pre-existent body-of-knowledge in order to be fully appreciated. Unfortunately, the worst of these books are often those aimed at a general audience, where an intelligent discussion of the real issues at hand is often exchanged for anxiety and hyperbole.

Joel Brenner's _America the Vulnerable: Inside the New Threat Matrix of Digital Espionage, Crime, and Warfare_ is a brilliant exception to both of these categories. Mr. Brenner may be uniquely-positioned to write this work-- he is trained as both a lawyer and an economist, and he has served as the United States' National Counterintelligence Executive and as Senior Counsel at the National Security Agency. He has first-hand exposure to the problems posed by cyberwarfare, cybercrime, and cyber-espionage, and possesses both the intellect and analytic toolsets with which to approach these problems.

Mr. Brenner begins by outlining the different problem-spaces-- cybercrime, the electronic theft of intellectual property, threats to weapons systems from compromised components, threats to the national powergrid-- by drawing on individual cases and events, and weaving them into a comprehensive narrative. Mr. Brenner painstakingly backs up his observations with almost 500 footnotes. (As a practitioner working in this space, I am familiar with the majority of what Mr. Brenner discusses in _America the Vulnerable_, and I still came away with much excellent supplementary reading material courtesy of the well-sourced research.) He continues with an excellent predictive scenario-- "June 2017"-- which synthesizes all of the previous work and makes explicit the cumulative threat.

Next, Mr. Brenner undertakes a discussion of how the gathering of intelligence and the protection of secrets has been fundamentally altered by information's transitus into searchable, indexed digital media. He concludes with a chapter entitled "Managing the Mess", where he lays out a number of responses to the current problems, encompassing shifts in public policy, as well as practical operational responses to business in a world rich in emergent, disruptive technologies.

Mr. Brenner's ability to make technical attacks and weaknesses clear to less-technical readers is impressive. No prior background in information technology is necessary to read and understand this book; however, Mr. Brenner has been meticulous in his explanations of complex technologies, and information security professionals will clearly recognize the issues under discussion. Personally, this book will greatly benefit me when I have to articulate certain risks to my executive management team.

By its very nature, this book must be a survey-- Joel Brenner cannot completely plumb all the subjects he is addressing in a 320 page book, and some specialists may yearn for more in-depth discussion on areas of particular interest to them. That being said, I think Mr. Brenner has achieved something powerful here-- he is articulating technical, economic, and legal problems to non-specialists while retaining a maximum of complexity and nuance. And, he has some logical, *actionable* responses to the problem-space. Bravo!

Scary, but a "must read"

"I had no idea" pretty much sums up my reaction to the first part of this book, which describes our rather shocking national and business vulverability to "bad guys" and "bad countries" in the digital age. Certainly, it is a wake up call to the dark side of the productivity, social and communications benefits of our digital age.

Perhaps what I appreciate most, however, is that the book does not stop there -- it continues to outline public policy and business responses that might be feasible and that we should all certainly consider. In short, this is more than a mere litany of complaints/concerns and also a thoughtful start toward "doing something constructive" about the serious issues raised.

Remarkably well written despite the serousness of the subject.

Strongly recommend that everyone should read.

Convenient System!

Flashcards are an amazing way to recall information. There’s just something to reading snippets quickly. This system has everything you need in one spot. It’s portable, convenient and very effective to helping your retain information in the least amount of time. Of course, you won’t remember your stuff unless you actually use them! But the more you do, the better you will be when it comes to writing the exam. So if you’re thinking about making your own cards, save yourself the time by getting this system. Good but not great

Flashcards are genius in that I can absorb just a little bit of info when I have free time. I did not enjoy folding and tearing along the perforations to separate the 60 sheets of cards, though. I wish they'd come already separated. The writing is small and the explanations are lengthy, so my eyes tire quickly after just a few cards. I have founds some words missing in a few of the explanations and some acronyms are incorrect (FFIEC spelled FFEIC for example) which can be confusing. For the most part, this is a good product for study purposes but definitely could use improvement.

Enjoyed

As this was the text book for a classical civilization course I took, I found that this book was pleasantly readable, unlike most college texts. It was detailed enough so that it almost read like a novel at times, yet covered over 1000 years in the history of Rome so that it served as a good knowledge base. In addition, I enjoyed the fact that it took the knowledge one step further and analyzed WHY certain events occured (eg. the fall of the Western Roman Empire and why the East survived). I find many history texts that simply focus on WHAT occured and don't get into more detail. I liked how Starr divided Roman History into four units, with each section revolving around a central and important figure in Roman history (Hannibal,Caesar,Hadrian,St. Augustine). I found the "Roman Life" sections after each Unit to be a little bland at times, but the sections that were good were well written to hold my interest. I am very intrigued with ancient Roman history, and I found this text to be a worthwhile book, for academics or leisure.

Worthwhile For A Small Book.

The author does a fair job of introducing Roman History to the beginer. The who, what, and why are actually addressed. Many of the significant people are lucidly described. The sections on the Etruscan infuence, Rome's legacy to the modern world, and Roman law on pgs.10-14,54-59,152-5 were what I found to be of crucial importance. Lastly, the further reading and pronunciation glossary were also helpful.

Advice for Instructors and the Dedicated

What a shame this book is so tough to find! Author Duk-sung Son continues where he left off 15 years before in "Korean Karate: The Art of Tae Kwon Do" (1968), covering advanced material. This book is clearly geared towards high brown/red belts preparing for their cho-dan (first degree) test, as well as black belt level practitioners and instructors.

Son continues his style of completely examining each topic and answering just about any "why" a person might come up with. Throughout Son's tone is colleaguial, with advice given and concepts explained such as a parent might offer a beloved older child whom he wishes to see succeed. There is plenty to recommend continuous self-examination even for the highly skilled:

"If an instructor finds that many students fail their tests to move up to higher belt, he ought to examine his own methods. Perhaps his standards are higher than his ability to teach" (page 13)

Son also covers four additional black belt level forms, including Ship Su (hangetsu), Chul Gi 2 (naihanchi ee-dan), Yun-Bee (wan-su or Enpi), and Ja On (Jion). Son introduces this chapter with four solid pages of text explaining principles. One of several good examples of this would be:

"There is a principle which pertains to all forms, but particularely Black Belt ones. If it is fully understood and is incorporated into the practicing of forms, it becomes a part of the way the Tae Kwon Doist moves and is of great help to him as a fighter. It creates the essential element of balance. The principle is that, when the body is moved in any direction, it ought to be moved as if the center of gravity alone is being moved. [...]" (23)

Also of interest is the chapter on Women in Tae Kwon Do. It is clear that author Son rejected many of the "traditional" myths and stereotypes concerning female practitioners, offering insight to women and men about human nature and the realities of fighting. I believe also that the woman shown of pages 101 and 106 is Son's daughter, also an accomplished Chung Do Kwan practitioner.

This volume is definately more inclusive of sport elements, explaining tournament competition, rules, and advice for matches. Contents include:

An increadibly insightful book by the current WTA Grandmaste

This is one of the best martial arts books I have ever read. Most books fail to capture the way movements need to be executed by the entire body. This book caputers every element in a way that is easy for beginers to understand. A must for anyone who wants to become knowledgeable about the martial arts.

Preserves old style Taekwon-Do thinking

Recently, some friends from Taekwon-Do were married. Of all the books in my collection, this was the book that I tried to find for their present. When I started training, it was the only one available, so I have a special affection for it.
The one-strike TKD theory has become all but extinct. This book shows what one of the premier grandmasters of TKD expects from practioners and preserves some of the old traditions.
Of course, the whole section on forms is not "current".

No histology text is complete without photos

While the text itself covers the material adequately, it seems odd that a histology book would be entirely dependent on illustrations instead of photos. I guess it was to save cost but it makes it difficult to translate what the text says into what one would actually expect to see on a histology slide. While its not like histology atlases are hard to come by, this book would have been much better if it didn't require the use of an additional source.

Wonderful art work and very realistic story, but maybe too realistic for some kids

The artwork in "This One Summer" reaches out and pulls the reader into the story. It is a very sad but well told tale.

I have only one caution. The age range is 12-18. The subject matter is such that it may not be appropriate for some 12 year olds:
1)references to porn, oral sex, and blow jobs and 2) language.

You will have to decide if this is appropriate for your child. My older child can deal with it, but my younger one (still with in suggested age range) wanted nothing to do with it.

I was actually surprised at how difficult the story was. There was hope and joy, but so much sadness. The cover artwork is so joyful that I didn't expect it to be quite so heavy. I know it hinted at issues, but I was still not prepared.

Beautiful art, great book

This is a coming of age book about two girls growing up and becoming young adults as they spent one summer together at Awago beach. The characters in the book and the story plot are very realistic. I love the friendship between the girls, the curiosities of what the grown ups do, and all the summer elements the book captures. The story is very well written and beautifully illustrated. In my opinion, the book is easy and enjoyable to read but the content is not suitable for kids younger than 13.

Captures the strangeness of adolescence

Excellent book, it captures the strange fleeting feelings from adolescence. The feeling of looking far into the future and realizing that you will soon be dealing with the problems that your older friends and relatives deal with. Finding out that your parents can feel just as powerless and angry as you can. The excitement of the first time watching horror movies and wondering what real gore looks like. The nervous sensation of finding out what sex and relationships are all about and what they mean to you.

Spain and the Development of Modern Military Medicine

'A study of the “largely overlooked medical, surgical, and nursing implications” of the Spanish Civil War. Opening with a survey of prewar medicine in Spain, Coni observes that while quite up to date, the profession was not prepared for the demands of a full scale war. Shifting easily between the two sides, Coni follows with chapters addressing the response of the medical profession to the war and the problem of recruiting and training nurses (particularly given prewar they were usually nuns). There are chapters on caring for wounds, the first widespread use of blood transfusions, coping with famine and disease, the medical organization of both sides, the medical service of the International Brigades, and foreign medical support to the Nationalists. One chapter uses case studies of some campaigns to illustrate the increasing sophistication of the medical services, and is followed by one with profiles of various important individuals. The book ends with a look at the postwar impact of the wartime experience on Spain. Coni argues that despite obstacles, including political interference, each side evolved effective medical services. While he fails to discuss the broader influence of the Spanish experience on military medical in other countries, tending to see it as “overlooked,” this is an important read for anyone interested in the history of military medicine, and will also prove of value for students of the Spanish Civil War.'
